Has the time arrived for the stock to break free from a range heading into earnings next week? There has been much hype around this emerging Swiss company that grew revenues by 68% in 2022, 46% in 2023, and are expected to grow revenues by more than 25% in 2024 and 2025. Technically speaking ,that range of overhead resistance for On Holding (ONON) is easy to see on the weekly chart below. There was weekly downtrend line resistance originating from the 2022 high that was broken in Q1 '24. On earnings ahead Heading into earnings, I think it's wise to refer back to Q4 of 2023 earnings announced on March 12.

Nike has underperformed the market and its sector since mid-2021, but recently growth expectations from analysts have bottomed. With China's growth showing signs of a rebound and valuation near its historical low, it could be time for a comeback. We'll discuss how to set up an options trade to bet on a turnaround. Nike (NKE) has formed a triple bottom at the $90 support level over the past 3 years and recently it just bounced higher off this support. With so much optimism infusing markets at the moment, it's almost refreshing to chat with a pessimist like Guy Pope, the manager of Columbia Threadneedle's Contrarian Core Fund. Employing a philosophy of finding out-of-favor contrarian investments, he doesn't use complicated algorithms or obscure metrics to find the stocks he adds to his fund. AdvertisementStart with pessimismWhen it comes to consistently outperforming the market, Pope credits his success to one main factor: searching areas that other people aren't focused on. That turned out to be a prescient move the following year, when the market tanked and the growth stocks that had been flying so high were brought low. Advertisement3 contrarian stock picksA straightforward strategy and a distinctly disciplined approach have combined to give Pope and his fund a leg up on the competition.

Foot Locker (FL) reported quarterly results that can only be described as better than feared: Nearly all of the important metrics came in weaker than a year ago, but they weren't as terrible as expectations on Wall Street. While Wednesday's surge put Foot Locker's quarter-to-date gains at nearly 60%, the stock was still down roughly 27% in 2023. Better sales guidance than previously forecast and only a slightly worse earnings outlook also helped juice shares of Foot Locker. In our view, this is appropriate because Foot Locker is a turnaround story. Shoppers leave the American multinational sportswear and footwear retailer, Foot Locker store in Spain.

The bad news: Consumers aren't expected to spend more this holiday season. With spending in line with last year, this holiday shopping season becomes a market share story — a zero-sum game. Foot Locker (FL) has issues outside of the holiday season such as an inventory glut, an overreliance on Nike (NKE) and the need to shut down unprofitable stores. We see no reason to change our 4 rating on both stocks ahead of the holiday season. Bottom line We are in a good position to benefit from how discretionary dollars will be spent this holiday season.
